Why It Ended (The “Three Books, Three Seasons” Rule)

Before we get to the movie, I wanted to explain why the show is ending. This isn’t a case of a show being canceled. This was the plan all along. The reason is actually very simple and makes a lot of sense.

It’s all about the books. The entire series is an adaptation of the book trilogy written by Jenny Han.

• Book 1: The Summer I Turned Pretty (That was our Season 1)
• Book 2: It’s Not Summer Without You (That was Season 2)
• Book 3: We’ll Always Have Summer (That was our epic, 11-episode Season 3)

There is no fourth book. Jenny Han, who is also the showrunner, felt that three seasons for three books was the perfect way to tell the complete story. As she said, “Three books, three seasons. It feels right to me.” They even gave Season 3 extra episodes (11, up from 7 and 8) just to make sure they covered the whole final book properly.
