What Will the Final Season Be About?

If you haven’t read the books, you might be wondering where the story goes next. Season 8 will primarily adapt the ninth book in Diana Gabaldon’s series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. However, since the tenth and final book isn’t finished yet, the showrunners have had to get creative. They will be including parts of the unreleased tenth book and crafting their own ending to wrap up the TV show’s storylines.

Here is what we can expect:

• Return to the Ridge: Jamie and Claire are heading back to Fraser’s Ridge. But it’s not the peaceful home they left; the Revolutionary War is knocking on their door.

• Family Secrets: The official teasers hint that while the Frasers try to stay united, old family secrets will threaten to tear them apart from the inside.

• Jamie’s Fate: A recent teaser showed a very distraught Jamie and hinted at his “death.” While we know Jamie is a survivor, the show is clearly raising the stakes for the finale.

• New Faces: We are meeting some new characters, including Captain Charles Cunningham (played by Kieran Bew), his mother Elspeth, and a new member of the Grey family named Amaranthus.

Is This Really the End of the Universe?

Yes and no. Season 8 is definitely the end of the main Outlander series featuring Jamie and Claire as the leads.

However, the world is continuing! The prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which tells the story of Jamie’s parents and Claire’s parents, has already aired its first season and has been renewed. So, while we are saying goodbye to the main show, we aren’t leaving Scotland (or the stones) forever.

For now, I am going to spend the next few months re-watching the old seasons and preparing myself emotionally. It’s going to be a beautiful, heartbreaking farewell.
